Southern Corsica

A territoryof its own

Discover this territory which extends from Solenzara to Roccapina, covering the entire Freto plain (Pian d'Avretu) and its beaches as well as the micro mountainous region of Alta Rocca.

It’s the southernmost territory of Corsica (Extrême sud in french) Spread over two communities of communes: South Corsica and Alta Rocca, it is a varied territory where beaches and mountains rub shoulders. Whether you prefer beach and relaxation or hiking at altitude, you will find what you are looking for in the south of Corsica. A brief tour of the main attractions of your next destination.

Porto-Vecchio

The “City of Salt” takes its nickname from the old salt marsh (very active in the 19th century) located at the back of the bay. The 3rd city of Corsica is also the main city in the southern part of the island. Surrounded by the walls of the ancient citadel and its bastions, the old town is full of bars, restaurants and shops. Porto-Vecchio is also widely known for its beaches: Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, very popular with vacationers.

But that’s not all, 20 km away from the city center, the hamlet of l’Ospedale overlooks the city at an altitude of almost 1000 m. From there you will have a remarkable view over the entire region, and even as far as Sardinia on a clear day! Continue to the dam and its artificial lake, nestled in the heart of a beautiful forest from which you can reach the Punta di a Vacca Morta, the highest point of the town (1314 m).

Bonifacio

The southernmost city of Corsica, the “city of cliffs” lives up to its nickname. At the top of a limestone peninsula more than a kilometer long nestles the citadel, its maze of streets and its houses perched 70 meters above the water.

From the port, the boat tour of the caves or the excursion to the Lavezzi Islands nature reserve (also possible from Porto-Vecchio) are a must-do. It is even possible to reach Sardinia, only 12 km away, on the other side of the Strait of the “Bouches de Bonifacio”.

When it comes to swimming, Bonifacio has nothing to envy of its neighbor Porto-Vecchio with the magnificent beaches of Rondinara, Sant’Amanza, Petit Sperone or the most secret of Fazzio.

La Terre des Seigneurs

9000 years of history have forged this mountainous territory delimited by the moutains of Bavella, l’Ospedale and mountainous plateau of Cuscionu. From its highest point, Monte Alcudina (2 134 m), it extends to the shore of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

There we find in particular the prehistoric sites of Cucuruzzu and Capula (Levie), natural swimming pools (Cavu, Solenzara) and hiking trails, including the beginning (or end) of one of the most famous: the GR20. Many activities are possible there: canyoning, mountain biking, climbing, etc.

In Zonza, as you reach the Bavella massif, you will come across the Viseo racecourse, the highest in Europe, at more than 900 meters above sea level. Meetings are organized there during summer season.

It is hard to summarize this territory in just a few lines, we invite you to have a look at the website of the Alta Rocca tourism office to discover more.
